Effective Training: Program Management

CSM’s Five Commandments of Program ManagementCSM has developed an approach to program management training that is designed to ensure the effective implementation of new organizational direction.  This process assumes that organizational accountability is centered in senior managers, who are collectively responsible for implementing organizational direction and policy.  Understanding the essential role of senior managers, as well as understanding the “tools” available to all program managers, regardless of authority, is a critical aspect of CSM’s effort to train organizational managers in the effective implementation of organization strategy.  CSM approaches the program management piece of the Results Triad using the following commandments:

1)  Determine the critical issues and vulnerabilities of  the program, and the specific impact that program activities must achieve.

2)  Develop and oversee plans and strategic initiatives to produce long-term results.

3)  Identify and justify required resources and other support.

4)  Ensure effective collaboration, both internally and externally.

5)  Ensure oversight, reporting, timely decision making and accountability.

Real World Exercises in Program Management

In the commandments exercises, participants use actual data from their Area of Responsibility (AOR) to work through each of the five commandments with their fellow managers assisted by CSM consultants.

Participants are required to:
▪ Identify pressing concerns and issues and form a long-term strategic plan to solve them.
▪ Identify future goals and develop strategic initiatives.
▪ Establish collaborative relationships to get organization-wide results.
 
Course interaction among participants frequently leads to collaborative solutions and lessons that are immediately plugged into the organization.  This is not artificial training that fails to measure up to real world demands.
